Myers Project – From Start to Finish

We first began with the removal of all old fixtures and entire demo of old tile work and walls. We then worked carefully framing up new walls, taking into consideration the key role that each bay would play out, down the road. (You will see that with the soap niches) Once the plumber and electrician had roughed in their fixtures, it was time to start buttoning everything up. We chose to plaster everything, thinking that this is a better product and would achieve a nicer finish. The homeowner actually chose to go with a REAL Venetian Plaster on the ceiling with 2 coats of hand rubbed wax applied for added protection, and a Faux and Italian plaster on the walls. The “look” was well worth it.

Then came the “prep” for tile. We used a traditional concrete backer board for most of the shower walls. But used the “old school” method of mud walls for the radius corner. This method is the oldest and best of tile installation techniques. It is something that we offer at PMTG, and we are probably the last few that still know how to do it. Its something that was taught to my father by old timers and he has passed on to me. Once the shower walls and pan were dry from the prep work, you will notice a bright blue appearance to the walls. This is a 2 coat application of a water proof membrane/ crack suppression kit that we apply to the wall. While this is not necessary, we think it creates a nicer product, and is well worth it.

Myers Project – Removal, Framing and Mudding

Once all the prep was done, now came the task of measuring all the parts and pieces of stone that were needed to complete this shower. All total there were 25 pieces of the Costa Esmerelda scattered throughout this bathroom. As you can see we started with the large ones on the bottom and worked our way up from there. Carefully making sure we set everything plum and square for the next ones to sit onto. You will notice details like the mortised in shower seat, (which the homeowner was convinced would not hold her. So I jumped up and down on it a few times to set her mind at ease) the flared out soap holder on the wet wall, the built-in soap niche that was glued together and polished at the shop (Gotta give Richie credit for that one), the clean jam set for the shower door, the custom glued and fabricated window sill by the tub, and the full to full tile layout on the glass mosaics. All of these details did not go unnoticed by the homeowner. We think that these little things contribute to the overall look of the product.

Myers Project – Installing Stone Panels

Once the stone panels and pieces were finished we moved onto the glass mosaics. This was fairly easy, because we had taken great care with the stone panels, to create a full to full tile layout that was plumb and straight. And we had made sure that the radius corner was “dialed in” before we started. Once this was done we moved onto the island stone pebble shower floor. And you will notice that none of those rocks were cut. We carefully hand laid out the perimeter so to achieve a consistent look.

Myers Project – Installing Glass Mosaics and Stone Floor

Then we moved out to the main bathroom floor. This was fairly easy, with the exception of the radiant heat mat. We supplied and installed a Laticrete heat mat under the floor tile. The homeowner was dead set on this. She did not want a cold floor. This is certainly a nice option for those who are concerned that the tile floor will be to cold. These units are great for this purpose and come equipped with a programmable digital thermostat that a licensed electrician will hook up.

Myers Project – Main Bathroom Floor

Once the floor was completed we concentrated on the final details. The vanity top, shower door trim, window trim, glass mosaic inserts and backsplashes, and sealing all stone and caulking all joints. The final result is quite different than what we started with. The homeowner was well pleased with the results.

We think by showing you these subtle details you will appreciate what separates us at PMTG from other stone or tile companies. Its been a family owned and operated business since 1975 and we take a tremendous amount of pride in our work. Its something that my father started a long time ago and I hope to continue. Gold Prism Award

We recently participated in a project that won the prestigious GOLD PRISM award from the Builder’s Association of Greater Boston in the category “Best Single Family Home over 6000 square feet”, for a lakefront lodge-style residence in Maine. Everyone who worked on this project, inside and out, deserves credit for this award!

New England Home Magazine is running a special advertorial section on PRISM winners in their upcoming issue. The magazine has a circulation of 60,000 including New England’s most affluent homeowners, newsstands, trade professionals and events.
